Quiapo is a historic district in Manila, Philippines, known as the “Old Downtown of Manila.” It is centrally located and bounded by the Pasig River, San Miguel, Sampaloc, Santa Cruz, and Recto Avenue. The district is renowned for its cultural and religious significance, particularly the Quiapo Church, which houses the Black Nazarene, a sacred statue that attracts millions of devotees annually during its January procession. Quiapo has been a go-to-place since I was in college, not just because of the vast array of goods offering everything from electronics to herbal remedies at reasonable prices but also because of Hidalgo St., where most photography shops dominate the street.
This set of images, Humans of Quiapo, a collection of portraits of vendors and other people near the Quiapo church, won 1st place at the International Photo Awards Philippines ( Portrait Category) in 2018.
